Château of Fontainebleau was built by an Italian at the request of François I, who was inspired by Renaissance Italy. It was this King who convinced Leonardo da Vinci to leave Italy and settle in France. (See: https://pixieinfrance.blogspot.com)
Easy to see why this place was so loved, even General Patton set up his headquarters en route to Berlin and has more Napoleon Bonaparte connections than any other palace in France.
It was on this famous horseshoe-shaped staircase that Napoleon delivered his abdication speech before heading into exile in 1814.
This is a staircase!
All quite breathtaking and pictures say it all…..
You could not begin to cover the furnishings, textiles and fabulous tapestries but here are a few of my favourites from many photographs…
And as for the gardens..massive!
